Hubble Space Telescope Pics Are Amazing

Let's take a look at one such discovery and the Hubble space telescope work that went along with that discovery.

Just this year the Hubble Space Telescope took a look and got Hubble space pics of the Boomerang Nebula. It saw, for instance, that the nebula, a reflecting cloud made up of gas and dust, contains two almost symmetrical cones made up of matter that the central nebula star is systemically ejecting. The Hubble telescope pics visualize this bipolar outflow, as astronomers call this ejection.

Hubble scientists have determined, through study that includes Hubble pics, that a mass almost equal to one hundred fifty percent of the Sun's mass has left the Boomerang Nebula's central-most star as a result of this ejection. Hubble telescope pics show how the Nebula got its name. When viewed through earth bound telescopes this phenomenon looks, indeed, like a boomerang. Hubble space pics clarify the detailed ripples and other patterns near this centralized star that can't be seen from these earth bound telescopes.

These Hubble space telescope picture were taken early in 2005 with a light filter and several polarization filters which act much the way sunglasses do for our own eyes, allowing only certain amounts of light and sun to filter through.

The Boomerang Nebula, first studied in 1995, is now, through the study of Hubble telescope pictures and the telescope itself, determined to be 5000 light years from us, near Centaurus, in the southern hemisphere.
