Keck Telescopes of the Mauna Kea Observatory
There are two Keck telescopes I and II. They are the two largest
optical near infrared telescopes of the Mauna Kea Observatory in Hawaii. The
Mauna Kea Observatory is one of the most important land-based observatories
in the world, because it is isolated, and because there are no interferences
from man-made light sources.
The Keck I telescope began viewing 1993 and Keck II began in 1996. They
have 10m mirrors. The mirror consists of 36 smaller hexagonal mirrors that
all work together. When both work together they have the power of an 85m
mirror.
